After successfully launching the Surface Pro 3 locally, Microsoft Malaysia has something new for its fans here. The Surface 3 is the more affordable and the more consumer-friendly of the two. This mobile computer is targeted at students, schools and for anyone who wants to have a portable windows-based computer/tablet without forking out anything more than what a competent laptop would cost.

Microsoft calls its Surface line the tablet that can replace your laptop and it may not be too far-off from that claim. Although the Surface 3 is the lightest and thinnest Surface yet, the tablet still retains the line’s premium design, performance, and efficiency. The tablet runs Windows 8.1 like a desktop or laptop and even comes with a 1-year subscription of Microsoft Office 365 Personal (including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and OneDrive cloud storage). It is also ready for Windows 10 when that becomes available later this year as a free upgrade.

Since the tablet is running the full version of the Windows OS, it will be able to run other common software that can be downloaded directly from the internet; such as third-party browsers or programs. For a more immersive experience, touch optimised apps or games are available for download from the Windows Store. Users can also create videos or edit pictures, including the ones taken using the built in 8 MP rear camera with autofocus, and a 3.5 MP camera at the front handles all the Skype calls to friends and family. The Surface 3 is not all about play either. Businesses and schools now stand to benefit greatly with the compatibility and the mobility that the tablet offers. Please go to the comparison page to get a better idea of the differences between the Surface 3 and the three other Surface 3 Pro variants.

The Surface Pen is another incentive to move to this tablet. With its over 250 levels of pressure sensitivity and the Palm Block technology (to prevent areas of the palm to interact with the display), users get to take notes, create documents, and basically write, draw and paint on the Surface as if it were a piece of paper. The pen will also allow for a one click launch of the OneNote app even when the tablet is in sleep mode. The Surface Pen uses Bluetooth 4.0 to conect, has right-click and erase buttons, and is battery powered.

The Surface 3 comes with an Intel Atom x7-Z8700 quad-core processor that’s clocked at 1.6 GHz but, because of the Intel Burst technology, this can be pushed up 2.4 GHz. The tablet comes in either the 2 GB RAM with 64 GB of storage variant, or 4 GB RAM with 128 GB. The 10.8” ClearType Full HD (1920 x 1080) display with a 3:2 aspect ratio supports 10-point multi-touch as well as the Surface Pen. The tablet has a 10-hour battery life for video playback, and has stereo speakers with Dolby sound. There’s even a 3-level kickstand built into the back of the tablet to suit different viewing positions. Some of the hardware features include Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac), Bluetooth 4.0, as well as a multitude of ports for USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort, microSD card reader, headset, cover, and micro-USB charging. All of these are built into the Surface 3’s sturdy yet lightweight magnesium body and the entire thing weighs in at 622 g.

The Surface 3 is available now for preorder at selected retailers for both private and commercial use. The tablets have a starting (GST inclusive) RRP of RM 1,989 for the 64 GB/2 GB RAM version while the 128 GB/4 GB RAM one goes for RM 2,389. Most of the retailers participating in the pre-order program are also giving away free Surface 3 skins while stocks last. Other accessories that will also be up for sale include the Type Cover for RM 479 (comes in Black, Bright Blue, and Red colour options), Power Supply for RM 149, Docking Station for RM 769, Screen Protector for RM 179, and the previously mentioned Surface Pen RM 189 (comes in Silver, Black, Bright Blue, and Red). The Surface 3 will be generally available at retail outlets on the 5th of May and by the 7th, the device will be available in 26 markets worldwide.
