Not only did ALCATEL get a brand makeover, and launch two new devices in its flagship IDOL 4 series, it also announced new additions to two other smartphone series, as well as a brand new 2-in-1 product category at MWC 2016. The ALCATEL PLUS 10 is the brand’s first venture into the currently popular 2-in-1 market and it comes with many unique features that are uncommon to this category. The device is said to come in a few different finishes, and in 4 different colours: Metallic Silver, Matte White, Matte Volcano Black, and Gray Leather. PLUS 10 is expected to go on sale in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa in June 2016. Unfortunately, no news as yet on its price and its availability in Asian markets.

The ALCATEL PLUS 10 is said to be one of the few 10” 2-in-1 devices in the market that’s also equipped with a on-board network connectivity. Powered by Windows 10 and Intel Atom x5-Z8350 SoC, the device will be able to run full Windows software including Microsoft Office, the very latest Microsoft Edge browser, as well as other popular programs that are compatible with the OS. The Cherry Trail based, 64-bit capable, quad-core processor comes with a typical operating speed of 1.44 GHz (goes up to 1.92 GHz in burst mode), and a built-in 8th generation, Broadwell based, Intel HD Graphics (with 12 Execution Units).

But work is not the only thing the PLUS 10 is capable of. Equipped with dual front speakers with 3D audio effect, and a 1280 x 800 IPS LCD display, the device provides an interesting option to consume media, and it does so in interesting ways. Though the keyboard dock does not have an adjustable hinge, it will still allow the tablet part of the device to be positioned in 3 different ways: laid flat down on its face when unused/on standby; laptop mode for productivity; and dock mode for presentations, slides, or for just watching videos. Naturally, these 3 modes are in addition to the device’s own tablet mode once the keyboard has been detached.

With multiple ports built-in, including a standard USB, a micro-USB (possibly for charging), and SIM slot on the keyboard dock, as well as a micro-USB, micro HDMI, audio jack, and even a microSD card slot on the tablet portion, PLUS 10 will be able to handle a lot more inputs without the need for an adapter. PLUS 10 offers 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB for storage; which can be further increased by way of a microSD card, with a maximum capacity of 64 GB. There’s also the Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity options, along with cameras on the front (2 MP with flash) and the back (5 MP) on the tablet itself, but interestingly, the 4G LTE Cat 4 (150 Mbps) connectivity has been moved to the device’s keyboard instead. This probably has to do with the limited space within the tablet’s slim 8.35 mm profile but still, a rather odd implementation.

Fortunately, the detachable keyboard and its built-in 2580 mAh battery will also work as a Wi-Fi hotspot, which can accommodate up to 15 devices. The battery may not be as big as one would have hoped but, at about half of the tablet’s own 5830 mAh battery, it does present the users with a really useful option. Together, the batteries are claimed to keep the PLUS 10 going for up to 8 hours of work or play.
