Windows 10 is generally-available today for the masses, and if you’ve clicked on the notification icon to “reserve” for the upgrade (on your eligible Windows 7 and 8.1 machines), you should already get a prompt to install by now. However, if you’re one of the unlucky folks — including yours truly — that received the Windows 10 upgrade error code 80240020 (possibly due to an incomplete or corrupted download), here’s a quick fix.

Windows 10 upgrade error 80240020

  • Locate and delete this folder: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
  • Run Command Prompt in Administrator mode (right click cmd.exe for that option)
  • Type ‘wuauclt.exe /updatenow’ (without quotes) and hit Enter

Now, the command ‘wuauclt.exe /updatenow’ also works to jump-start the Windows 10 upgrade installation, if you have yet to receive the prompt on your computer.

In my case, the steps above didn’t work at first, and I had to delete that download folder several times, empty the Recycle Bin, and reboot a few times, for the installation to finally start. Which is a minor annoyance, but it may be a huge problem if you have a slow connection.

This is because everytime you delete that download folder, Windows Update will redownload the whole Windows 10 upgrade files from scratch. This is also possibly where the problem came from; initially I was presented with a 5,422.9MB download, which failed again, but the final download that worked for me was ‘only’ 2,711.4MB in size. This suggests that either it downloaded the wrong Windows variant (quite unlikely), it hasn’t yet have prerequisite updates for the upgrade, or maybe it is just your usual corrupted download.
